F1 Student Visa Appointment in India: Intake Timeline and What Changed
F1 visa appointments in India for the August and January intakes: when you can book and travel, the 2025 social-media vetting rule, and how to get an earlier date.
For an F-1 student visa in India you need your I-20, the SEVIS fee receipt and a DS-160 before booking the OFC and interview. A new student's F-1 can be issued up to 365 days before the programme start date, but you may enter the US no earlier than 30 days before it. Since June 2025 student and exchange applicants must set their social-media profiles to public for an online presence review, and the DS-160 asks for every handle used in the last five years. Student slots fill before the August (fall) and January (spring) intakes, so start early, consider every consulate city in India, and remember you get one free reschedule. AppointVisa is a US visa appointment assistance service for applicants in India, handled by a dedicated booking team. Customers pay a small pre-payment to start; it is refunded in full if AppointVisa does not secure a booking by the agreed deadline, and the balance is due only once the agreed appointment is secured. The advance is not refunded if the customer cancels after monitoring has started.
- Book as soon as you have your I-20, SEVIS receipt and DS-160 — the visa can be issued up to 365 days before your start date.
- You can enter the US at most 30 days before the programme start date on your I-20.
- Since June 2025: social-media profiles must be public, and the DS-160 lists every handle from the last five years.
- Fall (August) intake demand peaks from April to July; spring (January) from October to December.
- Any consulate city in India works — OFC and interview can be in different cities. You get one free reschedule.
What you need before booking
- Form I-20 from your US school.
- SEVIS I-901 fee paid (keep the receipt).
- DS-160 submitted — list every social-media handle used in the last five years.
- MRV fee paid; the receipt is valid for 365 days.
The timing rules that matter
A new student's F-1 visa can be issued up to 365 days before the programme start date shown on the I-20, but you cannot enter the US more than 30 days before that date. In practice that means booking as early as you can — interview dates before the intake rush are the hardest to find.
Intake calendar
- Fall intake (August–September start): heaviest demand from about April to July.
- Spring intake (January start): demand from about October to December.
- Releases of new student dates are announced by the US Mission and fill quickly; earlier dates also appear when other students reschedule.
What changed in 2025–26
- June 2025: the State Department paused, then resumed, student-visa appointments with a comprehensive online presence review — F, M and J applicants must make their social-media profiles public.
- January 2025: one free reschedule per valid fee receipt in India; a second change or a missed appointment means a new fee.
- September 2025: applicants must generally interview in their country of nationality or residence — booking abroad is not a workaround.
- 2026: reports of student appointment pauses and backlogs at Indian posts — check the US Embassy India site for current status before you plan.
If the only dates are after your start date
Ask your school about a deferral or a later start date early, keep watching for released and cancelled dates across all five posts, and don't spend your one free reschedule on a date that only moves you a few days.
Let our team work on your appointment
Submit your request. Our team watches availability and books on your behalf — you pay a small pre-payment (refunded if we don't book by the agreed deadline), and the balance only after we secure your appointment. Conditions are in our refund policy.
